Vaqueros

We have a couple of players for Fist Full of Lead and Dead Mans Hand at my local club and I can say both games are a hoot.  I decided to paint my own crew.  Most of what everyone else is fielding is either generic cowboys, lawmen, Cavalry or Apaches.  I grew up on the Mexican border so Vaqueros and mariachis were a regular sight at Rodeos so I figured it was a good fit.  Black Scorpion Minatures had the best models and selection so I picked up thirteen.  If I want to do Curse of Dead Mans Hand I know where to find a Catrina and will only have to look for a La Llorona.  Here are the first three.  Pained with only thinned down washes in layers to build up the color.  Hope you like.

Step by step

War Monkey on LAF asked for a step by step on the cavern sections so here it is.  Built the basic structure out of foamex and liquid nailed chunks of bark onto the walls and floor.  Filled the voids with foam.  Glued some 3d printed pieces that will end up textured too.

Made a piping bag out of baking paper.  The duct tape is just a ring attached to itself to secure the bag so it does not unravel.  Filled with joint filling compound.

Used the bag to put blobs of filler in between the chunks of bark and then used a wet brush to texture the filler.

Once all of the spaces are covered in filler and set I add details such as permanent details and rubble.

Two more sections done

Finished up another two sections.  I still need to touch up the brown edges as they got a bit nicked up when I felted the bottoms.  First some action shots to give a sense of scale.

Three corridors section.  The highlight came off a bit rough but it is still usable.

Some details

Next few show how the sections can align when rotated.

Beginning a modular cave system.

I have finished the first piece of a modular cave system that has been kicking around in my head for a couple of years now.  I was torn between doing many small modular pieces and larger set sections.  I chose the latter as they will store better and will be modular enough for what I want to do.  I started with a 12 inch square foamex base.  The walls are 1 and 3/4 iches high.  The texturing was done with large chunks of bark and spackle.  I have three sections built and in various states of texturing.  I am planning on completing either nine or twelve section.  Enough to cover a 3X3 or a 4X4 table.

Hope you like.

The most foul, cruel, and bad tempered Testudinidae

“Listen, those terrapin got a viscous streak a mile wide, they're killers.  Just look at the bones!"

I was testing out my 3d printer by printing the same file at different scales.  I had to decide what I was going to do with all those tortoise that I printed.

I figured a tortoise swarm would be frightening.
